Choosing the Right Rolling Paper for Unprocessed Tobacco

By Ounce28

The rolling paper is the other half of the equation. Get it wrong and even the finest tobacco rolls poorly, burns unevenly, or tastes off. Here's what to know when choosing a paper for whole-leaf unprocessed tobacco.

Paper Weight

Lighter papers (under 14 gsm) are ideal for unprocessed tobacco. They burn at a similar rate to the leaf, keeping the smoke clean and the flavour profile intact. Heavy papers can overpower the subtle, earthy notes of natural tobacco.

Material

Rice papers are the best match for natural tobacco — they're thin, nearly tasteless, and burn very slowly. Hemp papers are a close second and have a slightly more robust burn. Avoid bleached white papers with additives if you want a truly clean smoke.

Size

1¼ size is the sweet spot for a standard roll with Ounce28. King size gives you more room to work if you prefer a longer, looser pack. Single wide works for a tight, quick roll.

Gum Line

Look for natural acacia or sugar-based gum. It seals cleanly without affecting the burn. Some papers use synthetic gum that creates a slight chemical taste at the seam — something you'll notice immediately with clean, unprocessed tobacco.

The right paper becomes invisible. You should taste the tobacco, not the wrapper.
