An uneven burn — where one side of the cigarette runs faster than the other — is one of the most common problems for hand rollers. It wastes tobacco, looks messy, and ruins the draw. Here's what causes it and how to fix it.

Cause 1: Uneven Packing

This is the most common culprit. If tobacco is packed more densely on one side of the roll, that side has less airflow and burns slower. The open side burns ahead. Fix: distribute the tobacco as evenly as possible before you begin rolling. A thin, consistent layer beats a lumpy one every time.

Cause 2: The Seam

If the paper seam isn't fully sealed, air gets in at the glue line and creates an accelerated burn path. Fix: ensure the gum is completely wet and pressed flat. Run your fingernail along the seam after sealing.

Cause 3: Lighting Technique

Lighting only one side of the tip creates an asymmetric burn from the start. Fix: hold the cigarette horizontally and rotate it as you light, applying heat evenly across the full tip circumference before you draw.

Cause 4: Wind

Outdoor smoking in any breeze will accelerate the windward side of the roll. Fix: cup your hand or turn away from the wind when lighting and smoking.

With Ounce28's whole-leaf tobacco, an even pack is easier because the leaf shreds consistently without clumping. The fix usually starts before the roll does.
