Hand rolling is a skill. It takes maybe twenty minutes to get passable at it, and a few sessions to get genuinely good. Here's a straightforward guide to rolling your first clean cigarette by hand.

What You Need

  • Ounce28 rolling tobacco (15gm pouch)
  • Rolling papers (1¼ or king size, rice or hemp)
  • A filter tip (roach card or cotton filter)

Step 1: Prepare the Leaf

Take a small pinch of tobacco — less than you think you need. Unprocessed whole leaf is denser than machine-cut commercial tobacco. Remove any larger stem pieces and work the leaf gently between your fingers until it's evenly textured.

Step 2: Shape the Filter

Roll the filter card into a tight cylinder, about 6mm in diameter. This sets the diameter of your cigarette, so get it right first.

Step 3: Load and Shape

Place the paper in a V-shape between your index fingers and thumbs, gum line facing you at the top. Place the filter at one end, spread the tobacco evenly alongside it. The key is even distribution with slightly more tobacco in the middle.

Step 4: Roll

Use your thumbs to roll the tobacco into a cylinder shape inside the paper without actually rolling the paper yet. Once the tobacco is shaped, tuck the near edge of the paper under the tobacco, then roll upward. Lick the gum line and seal.

Step 5: Pack and Twist

Gently tap the filter end on a surface to settle the tobacco. Twist the open end closed. Your first roll won't be perfect. Your tenth will be.
